If needed, we can feed every person of India: Minister of Punjab Government
There have been many questions about the corona lockdown that the grain crisis will not arise all over the country. At the same time, Punjab's Food and Civil Supplies Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu has said that we have so much buffer stock that if needed we can feed every resident of India. Despite the lockdown, the Punjab government has purchased 90 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in 19 days. Punjab aims to purchase 135 lakh metric tonnes of wheat.
The Punjab government said on Tuesday that migrant workers who want to return to their home state. The government will bear the expenses of their travel by laborers special trains and has allocated Rs 35 crore for this.
The first labor special train carrying 1,200 migrant workers from Jalandhar railway station in Punjab to Manglawar left for Jharkhand. A government statement issued here said, "The Punjab government has allocated Rs 35 crore in the first phase of payment of its share in the transportation of migrants by the Indian Railways." The government estimates that between five and six lakh stranded workers will choose to travel by rail to return to their home state, and the rest will prefer to go by road.
Sufficient grain stock in FCI godowns: Govt
The government said that there is sufficient stock of food grains in the godowns of Food Corporation of India, the nodal agency for the purchase and distribution of food grains. Even after meeting the requirement of additional wheat and rice provided for free during the lockdown period.
An official statement said that Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan gave detailed information about various steps being taken by the government and the total stocks of food grains and pulses and pulses sent to the states till now.
He said that FCI currently has 276.61 lakh tonnes of rice and 353.49 lakh tonnes of wheat. Therefore, a total stock of 630.10 lakh tonnes of grain is available. In contrast, under the NFSA (National Food Security Act) and other welfare schemes, about 60 lakh tonnes of food grains are required for a month.
Paswan said FCI reserves are sufficient even after fulfilling the additional commitments during lockdown.
